Breast Surgery - Mastectomy, Lumpectomy, Breast Biopsy
The skilled and experienced surgeons at Piedmont General Surgery Associates provide various types of breast surgery in Rock Hill, SC. The breast surgeries that we perform include full and partial mastectomy and breast biopsy. The type of procedure you require will be based on an assessment by your physician.
Mastectomy: A mastectomy is a type of surgery performed to remove all of the tissue from a breast as a means to treat breast cancer, or sometimes even to prevent it in high-risk patients. During a full mastectomy, all of the breast tissue including the nipple and possibly even the lymph nodes are removed. Some of the breast cancer types that a mastectomy is used to treat include:
- Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), or noninvasive breast cancer
- Stages I and II (early-stage) breast cancer
- Stage III (locally advanced) breast cancer — after chemotherapy
- Inflammatory breast cancer — after chemotherapy
- Paget's disease of the breast
- Locally recurrent breast cancer
Partial Mastectomy: A partial mastectomy, or breast-conserving surgery, may be used for patients with stage I or II breast cancer. During this procedure, only the tumor and the tissue around it are removed in order to conserve breast tissue. There are two types of partial mastectomy, a lumpectomy or a quadrantectomy. A lumpectomy removes the cancer tumor and a small area of normal tissue around it. A quadrantectomy removes the tumor and more of the breast tissue than a lumpectomy. Unlike a total mastectomy, breast-conserving surgery helps to preserve the appearance of the breast.
Breast Biopsy: A breast biopsy is performed after a suspicious lesion is found during a mammography or ultrasound, and is used to make a diagnosis. A small sample of tissue is removed and then examined in a laboratory to determine whether the suspicious area is breast cancer. The results of this test will determine whether further treatment needs to be performed, and what type.
