An excisional hemorrhoidectomy removes the hemorrhoidal tissue by cutting it out, and then either closing the wound with sutures (closed excisional hemorrhoidectomy) or leaving the incisions open (open excisional hemorrhoidectomy).

A stapled hemorrhoidectomy removes a portion of the hemorrhoidal tissue, and the remaining tissue is lifted back up into the anal canal and stapled into place. While this procedure usually causes less post-operative pain and has a shorter recovery time than the excisional procedure, it is not effective for larger external hemorrhoids, and patients tend to experience a recurrence of hemorrhoids more often with the stapled procedure.
