What is da Vinci® Robotic Surgery

Unlike the name suggests, your surgery is not being performed by a robot. Instead, a highly trained surgeon is at the helm to conduct your surgery using:

  • 3d high-definition vision system
  • Special instruments
  • Computer software

During the procedure, your surgeon resides at a console and controls four robotic arms. Depending on the procedure being performed, one or a few small incisions – only 1 to 2 cm – are made in a specific area of your skin. A camera is inserted to provide a magnified, close-up view of the area being operated on in your body. Tiny instruments are also inserted through these openings, with the surgeon remaining in complete control. He or she manipulates these arms which bend and rotate to mimic the way a human hand and wrist would move, but with even more delicacy and accuracy.
