Why Can’t I Get Pregnant?

If you and your partner have been trying to conceive for a year or more without success, there may be an underlying cause. Know that you are not alone, because infertility affects 10%-15% off couples in the United States. In order to become pregnant, a lot has to go right, and timing is everything. The only time that you can become pregnant from sexual intercourse is during ovulation, when an egg is released from the ovaries. From there, the egg must be fertilized by a sperm before traveling to the uterus where implantation must take place. If any of these stages are interrupted, pregnancy will not result. Infertility is no one’s fault, and we encourage couples to work together as a team to determine the source of the infertility while remaining patient and supportive. We may recommend testing your partner’s sperm to ensure it is viable and healthy. From there, we will call or additional imaging and tests to assess your overall reproductive health.

Causes & Risk Factors of Infertility

Some of the causes of infertility in women include:

  • Ovulation disorders
  • Fallopian tube damage
  • Uterine or cervical disorders
  • Endometriosis

Certain risk factors exist that can make infertility more likely to occur:

  • Age – Women over the age of 35 produce fewer eggs.
  • Weight – Being overweight or underweight can interfere with ovulation.
  • Smoking – Can harm the cervix and fallopian tubes. This also increases the risk of miscarriage.
  • Sexually Transmitted Infections – Chlamydia and gonorrhea can damage the fallopian tubes.
