What is a Colposcopy?

This is a diagnostic procedure used to closely examine the vulva, vagina, and cervix. It is most often recommended as a way to diagnose abnormal findings from a pap smear. A colposcopy is simple and painless and can be performed in an office setting. It typically only takes about 10 to 20 minutes and it may or may not include a biopsy. A colposcopy is used to:

  • Diagnose genital warts
  • Explore the cause of cervix inflammation
  • Diagnose precancerous changes in the vagina, vulva, and/or cervix
  • Follow up after tests are positive for HPV
  • Discover the cause for unexplained bleeding or other cervical problems

What to Expect During a Colposcopy

When you have a colposcopy, you will assume the same position as you would for a pap smear: lie on your back with your knees in the air and your feet in support stirrups. From there, your doctor or nurse practitioner will insert a speculum to keep the walls of your vagina open. A special instrument called a colposcope is inserted which serves to magnify the area and provide a closer look.

A Colposcopy with a Biopsy

If any suspicious areas are found, a biopsy will be taken to collect samples of that tissue so they can be observed under a microscope. If you do not require a biopsy, you can go about your day as normal after the colposcopy is over. If you do require a biopsy, you may experience some discomfort in the vagina, light bleeding, an/or discharge. Use a pad but avoid tampons and you should also abstain from sexual intercourse for a week or so.
