Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedures (LEEP)
Rock Hill GYN & OB performs loop electrosurgical excision procedures in both Rock Hill and Fort Mill, SC, to diagnose and treat abnormal cells in the cervix or vagina. We invite you to learn more about our approach and to contact us with any questions.
What is LEEP?
Women who have a Pap smear showing abnormal cells in their cervix may find that their physician will suggest an electrosurgical procedure commonly called LEEP to remove those cells. This minimally invasive procedure uses a thin wire loop through which an electric current is passed to remove a thin layer of tissue containing the abnormal cells. The procedure is performed in a doctor’s office and seldom takes more than a few moments. Like all procedures, LEEP does have some risks so it is important to understand them before having the procedure. WE will provide all of the information you require in a detailed yet digestible format. Do not hesitate to ask any questions or raise any concerns you may have.
How is LEEP Performed?
After a local anesthesia is administered, the thin wire loop is inserted into the vagina and to the cervix. Electrical current is applied to the loop and the loop acts as a scalpel to remove the abnormal tissue. The tissue is then evaluated to make or confirm a diagnosis. Other procedures can be used to remove the abnormal cells and include:
- Cryosurgery
- Laser Treatment
- Cone Biopsy
However, the actual procedure used depends upon how much tissue needs to be removed and where the cells are located on the cervix.
How Painful is LEEP?
Do not feel intimidated by the use of electrical current. During this procedure, you will not feel any heat or cutting feeling. Tt is common to feel some mild discomfort or perhaps some cramping, but due to the use of numbing agents many people do not feel anything at all.
How Long Does LEEP Recovery Take?
Recovery time usual takes around four weeks, during which you will be asked to avoid using tampons or having vaginal intercourse and you should limit strenuous activity. You may have cramping or spotting which is completely normal. We will schedule a follow-up appointment to assess your recovery and determine the next steps. If you experience any complications before that time, reach out to us immediately.
