NovaSure®
One out of five women experience heavy, painful bleeding during their period. This can cause many to miss out on enjoyable activities and work. It can have a negative impact on your mood and overall well-being. Rock Hill GYN & OB proudly offers the NovaSure procedure in both Rock Hill and Fort Mill, SC, to combat abnormal uterine bleeding so you can enjoy your life again.
What is NovaSure?
The FDA approved NovaSure in 2001, and it continues to be used and trusted by physicians. This quick, safe, and effective procedure is performed one time and it only takes five minutes. As a result, it vastly reduces or completely eliminates heavy menstrual bleeding. There are no hormones required and it is minimally invasive, so recovery is swift.
How is NovaSure Performed?
This simple procedure can be performed at our office. You will be awake, but a local anesthetic may be administered into your uterus through your cervix.
- Your cervix is dilated, and a triangular netted device is inserted into your uterus
- The netting expands to fit the size and shape of your uterus
- Radio frequencies are used to ablate the endometrium, which is the tissue that lines your uterus. This energy is delivered for about 90 seconds.
- The netting is removed, and the procedure is complete.
You will want to arrange for transportation to and from your appointment and you will need to take it easy for the next day or two. Do not insert anything into your vagina for four weeks following the procedure. We will provide you with detailed instructions about your recovery and schedule a follow-up appointment. If you experience fever, increased bleeding, or pain, contact us immediately.
Who is Eligible for NovaSure?
Premenopausal women who experience heavy and painful periods and who are finished bearing children may want to consider NovaSure as an alternative to more invasive procedures like a hysterectomy. Because the uterine lining is eliminated during this procedure, you must be 100% positive that you do not want to have children in the future. It is still possible to become pregnant after undergoing NovaSure, so contraception counseling with your doctor is imperative.
What are the Benefits of NovaSure?
In addition to being a quick, safe, and effective alternative to surgery, women who have had NovaSure report:
- A significant reduction in painful periods
- A significant reduction of PMS symptoms and irritability
- Increased energy level
- Overall better mood
- Able to participate in work and social activities
